Refuelling guide

Five steps for refuelling in Japan, common Japanese pump labels and safety reminders.

  1. Check the fuel before filling

Check the fuel-door label and rental contract. If they disagree or you are unsure, ask the rental company before filling.

    レギュラー
    Regular petrol
    ハイオク
    High-octane petrol
    軽油
    Diesel

A kei (light) car does not necessarily use diesel. 軽油 means diesel, not “fuel for light cars”.

  2. Make it safe before opening the cap

Switch off the engine. No smoking or flames. Touch the static-discharge pad before opening the fuel cap, and follow the station’s safety notices.

  3. Follow the machine’s instructions

Select the fuel you have checked and the amount or full-tank option. Payment order varies: follow the screen or ask an attendant.

    セルフ
    Self-service
    現金

    会員
    Member
    満タン
    Full tank
  4. Hold the nozzle; stop when it stops

Insert the nozzle fully and keep holding it while filling. Stop at the automatic shutoff; do not top up. If it repeatedly stops too early, ask an attendant.

  5. Finish at the pump

Return the nozzle and close the fuel cap and door securely. Follow the station’s remaining payment steps and collect your receipt.

At a staffed station, ask the attendant to help you refuel.

Wrong fuel?

Do not start the engine or switch on the vehicle’s power. Contact the attendant and rental company for help.
